The battery barely charges, the device shuts off right when you need it\u2026 and the obvious thought is: <strong>\u201cI\u2019ve been scammed! This panel doesn\u2019t deliver what it promises.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">If you\u2019re reading this, chances are you\u2019re part of the legion of <em>makers<\/em> and tinkerers who\u2019ve dreamed of powering a monitoring project (like a sensor with an ESP32 or an ESP8266) using solar energy, with those small and eye\u2011catching panels sold for ridiculously low prices on platforms like AliExpress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">In this analysis, we\u2019re going to bust this popular belief. Here\u2019s the <em>spoiler<\/em>: the power rating advertised by the seller of <strong>AliExpress solar panels<\/strong> is, in all likelihood, <strong>real and legitimate<\/strong>. The issue isn\u2019t that the manufacturer is lying, but rather a <strong>misreading of the specifications<\/strong> and the <strong>electronics<\/strong> we use to draw that energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-el-secreto-oculto-en-las-fichas-tecnicas-el-w-p-y-el-stc\">The Hidden Secret in the Datasheet: Wpeak (Peak Power) and STC<sub>p<\/sub> and the STC<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you buy a solar panel, the key fact is its <strong>Peak Power<\/strong> (<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/emariete.com\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-d3890b95bec4d0153567bdb88f134486_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"W_p\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"18\" width=\"24\" style=\"vertical-align: -6px;\"\/> o <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/emariete.com\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-55ce45813f9ed77c5f01c917d246978b_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"P_{max}\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"15\" width=\"37\" style=\"vertical-align: -3px;\"\/>). But this value comes from an artificial condition that is rarely, if ever, fulfilled on your balcony or in the mountains: the <strong>Standard Test Conditions (STC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do Standard Test Conditions (STC) mean?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">STCs are the international standard under which all solar panels (large or small) are tested in a laboratory. They are defined by three crucial factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Solar irradiance:<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/emariete.com\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-bdded4a685dcf92553af70af4e7ef9a4_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"1000 W\/m\u00b2\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"22\" width=\"89\" style=\"vertical-align: -5px;\"\/>. Of course, you\u2019ll come across 1W panels labeled as 10W, but now that you\u2019ve read this post, you know that <strong>the energy a solar panel can produce is directly proportional to its size<\/strong>, and that there aren\u2019t huge differences between them\u2014or magical panels that defy physics.
