{"id":240889,"date":"2023-10-26T13:50:57","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T11:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emariete.com\/?p=240889"},"modified":"2023-10-26T13:50:59","modified_gmt":"2023-10-26T11:50:59","slug":"repair-usb-30w-6a-6-output-charger-repair-usb-30w-6a-6-outputs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emariete.com\/en\/reparacion-cargador-usb-30w-6a-6-salidas\/","title":{"rendered":"Repair USB Charger 30W 6A and 6 Outputs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently I was repairing a USB charger (a six-output power supply) that was theoretically supposed to provide up to 6 amps at 5 volts (30W).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I repaired the power supply, but once it was repaired, it would not deliver 6 amps and as soon as the consumption got close to 2 amps the output would cut off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am writing this post as a complement to the video I posted on YouTube with the repair, to expand on the information and to leave some additional thoughts and notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recommend that you first watch the repair video (if you haven't already).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\ud83c\udfc5 Power Supply Repair USB Charger 30W 6A: Troubleshooting and Useful Tips\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GmJHz98BwLw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making these videos takes a lot of work. That&nbsp;<strong>will motivate me to keep making more videos like these.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sintomas\">Symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The power supply worked well for several years, with several devices permanently connected to it 24 hours a day, although none of them really consumed too much (I estimate that with everything connected, the power consumption must have been between 1 and 1.5 amps).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One day the power supply simply stopped working. There was no voltage at the output. I had to get on with repairing the USB charger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I measured the output of the power supply and it was: no load (nothing connected), 5.04V, which is correct, but when I connected anything it turned off (I tested it with a 1A load), interrupting the output and turning off the power indicator LED.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diagnosis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visual inspection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing I did was to open the power supply, to access the board, and make a detailed visual inspection. Often the failure in this type of device can be seen with the naked eye (inflated electrolytic capacitors, burnt or exploded components, overheating marks, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was nothing obvious that could indicate what the problem was, so I moved on to the measurement stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Measures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the repair of the USB charger, I was going to focus on the electrolytic capacitors in the low voltage area, as experience showed me that they were the most prone to cause a failure like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, the three capacitors had a very high Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) and had lost part of their capacitance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first one had an ESR of about 6\u03a9, the second one about 8\u03a9 and the third one 2.5\u03a9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this table you can see typical values for electrolytic capacitors of different capacitance and voltage:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"285\" src=\"https:\/\/emariete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Typical-ESR.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-240896\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emariete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Typical-ESR.png 567w, https:\/\/emariete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Typical-ESR-300x151.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From the Atlas ESR70 meter manual<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These 470\u00b5F, 10V capacitors should be about 0.42\u03a9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Repair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The repair of the USB charger consisted of replacing the three capacitors with new ones of the same value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The capacitors I put in had an ESR of about 0.7\u03a9 but I took them for good, as they are cheap Chinese capacitors, bought on AliExpress and you can't expect much from them either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A capacitor is usually said to be in poor condition when its ESR is more than twice its typical value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the repair had been carried out, it was time to check the results and to consider it good or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first check showed us that the power supply, at no load, gave us 5.03V, which is correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next check was to connect a load (the same 1A load we had used before) to see if it was still working properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, with a load of 1A at the output it still worked, with an output voltage of 5.05V.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next test? Try it with higher consumptions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I tried 3A, the source would immediately shut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I repeated the attempt with 2A and it also shut down....<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should I take the repair for good or not? I decided to leave it for a while and think...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The surprise: when is 30W power adaptor not a 30W power adaptor?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not satisfied with the result, I started to investigate, and found the following...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The THX203H integrated circuit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, I checked the datasheet of the THX203H integrated circuit, which is the IC used by the power supply. It was not difficult to find it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div data-wp-interactive=\"core\/file\" class=\"wp-block-file\"><object data-wp-bind--hidden=\"!state.hasPdfPreview\" hidden class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/emariete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/THX203H.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px\" aria-label=\"Embed of THX203H.\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-0614f999-7b7a-4f79-b0a0-9cfeabbe8cb8\" href=\"https:\/\/emariete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/THX203H.pdf\">THX203H<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/emariete.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/THX203H.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button wp-element-button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-0614f999-7b7a-4f79-b0a0-9cfeabbe8cb8\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first surprise was to find that this IC is capable of providing a maximum of 12W continuous and 18W peak. This means that at 5V it provides a <strong>maximum 2.4A with peaks of 3.6A<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How had I been sold a <strong>30W power supply<\/strong> which used a controller that could give a <strong>maximum of 12W<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did the power supply have \"something\" extra that made it able to deliver 30W?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Schematic diagram of the power supply board<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to easily check if the board had \"something\" that allowed it to give the 30W, without spending a lot of time analysing each component of the board, I tried to locate the electronic schematic and, although I didn't find the exact schematic of this board (which is marked WA9003-AD0G), I found the <a href=\"https:\/\/oshwlab.com\/rindeal\/WAA020\">WAA020 board schematic<\/a>which is very similar and which a person called Rindeal (Jan Chren) had been kind enough to reverse engineer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was nothing in the schematic to increase the power output, but I found something interesting: this power supply, which was almost the same, and which also used the THX203H controller, was declared to be of <strong>5V and 1.5A<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The WA9003-AD0G board<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I went looking for the board... and found it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several sellers on AliExpress had this board for sale, for example these two:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull is-light\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim-100 has-background-dim\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is certainly incredible that <strong>these power supplies cost less than 1\u20ac<\/strong> (plus shipping costs, which are also cheap).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to make one thing clear: in my opinion these power supplies are not bad, on the contrary, I think they are quite well built (especially compared to many \"2A chargers\" I have seen around...) the problem, and what I am criticising here, is not the board or its manufacturer, but the manufacturer of the charger, <strong>who is deceiving us<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The truth of the \"30W 6A\" USB charger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Made up his mind, once the USB charger repair was done, that <strong>I had been cheated<\/strong>I decided to treat it as a \"normal\" charger (around 1.5A or 2A) and tested again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, what I wanted to know was how many amps it could actually supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the new tests, I used an EDB-USB+ electronic load to be able to analyse more easily and to get some graphs by connecting it to the PC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way I could clearly see that <strong>the power supply performs perfectly up to almost 2A <\/strong>consumption, as you can see in the graph class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the light of the above, what we can say is that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>We are being deceived <\/strong>by selling us this power supply\/charger as being capable of supplying 30W 6A, they should be selling it as 1.5A (or 2A in the most optimistic case).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That said, <strong>the charger is not bad and, if we had been told the truth, it would be a recommended purchase.<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Material used in the repair of the USB charger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this repair I used the following material:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udc49 <a
