{"id":236837,"date":"2020-12-17T21:00:45","date_gmt":"2020-12-17T20:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emariete.com\/?p=236837"},"modified":"2023-06-21T11:14:58","modified_gmt":"2023-06-21T09:14:58","slug":"comparative-co2-sensors-mh-z19b-vs-senseair-s8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emariete.com\/en\/comparativa-sensores-de-co2-mh-z19b-vs-senseair-s8\/","title":{"rendered":"Comparison CO2 sensors MH-Z19B vs Senseair S8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/emariete.com\/en\/carbon-gas-co2-meter\/\"><strong>tutorial to build the Easy CO2 meter<\/strong><\/a>which I wrote recently, aroused a lot of interest, getting <strong>more than 8,000 visits in its first month<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this CO2 meter I used a <strong>Chinese CO2 sensor MH-Z19B<\/strong>cheap and good value for money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thinking about how to improve the meter by using a sensor, also inexpensive, but <strong>of higher quality<\/strong>I have decided to evaluate the possibility of making an improved version of the CO2 meter with the <strong>Senseair S8 LP sensor, of Swedish origin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, while I'm deciding, I thought it would be best to start with a <strong>comparison CO2 MH-Z19B vs Senseair S8<\/strong>to analyse their similarities and, above all, their differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This comparison is made with the MH-Z19B but is equally valid for the original MH-Z19 and the newer MH-Z19C, taking into account their differences. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In view of these parameters, the Senseair S8 is indeed somewhat better than the MH-Z19B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should be borne in mind, moreover, that the <strong>MH-Z19B is a Chinese product<\/strong>while the <strong>Senseair S8 is a Swedish product.<\/strong>. I'm sorry, but I trust the parameters provided by a Swedish manufacturer much more, especially in cases like this, where checking the accuracy of the parameters provided by the manufacturer is not available to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-las-diferencias-mas-alla-de-los-parametros\">Differences beyond the parameters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the parameters, which, on paper, can be very interesting to know, there is one very important aspect, and this is <strong>the internal firmware, <\/strong>that makes them work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this type of sensors, <strong>the measurement is not obtained directly<\/strong>such as in the case of a mercury thermometer, but it is not a <em>\"deduces\".<\/em> of certain <em>\"effects\"<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of these sensors with <strong>NDIR technology<\/strong>The measurement consists of quantifying the scattering that occurs in an infrared beam as it passes through the air in its tiny measuring chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, this measure is <strong>temperature-dependent<\/strong> (and to a lesser extent humidity) and of its proper <strong>calibration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is as far as I wanted to go, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">calibration<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calibration is what <strong>makes a difference,<\/strong> really, between having the right measurements or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although these sensors are factory calibrated (and I assume, <em>as an act of faith<\/em>(the Senseair one is better calibrated), this calibration changes with use. The infrared lamp inside loses its effectiveness, the scatter detector loses its sensitivity, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this way, these sensors <strong>periodically self-calibrate<\/strong> to adjust their measurements, and <strong>it is their firmware that takes care of it.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, it seems, from what users of the sensor manufactured by Senseair say (I haven't used it yet), that <strong>its calibration firmware is much more intelligent\/accurate than that of the MH-Z19B<\/strong>and this, my friend, does make an important difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, Senseair is so confident in its self-calibration process that they say, and I quote: \"<em>Thanks to our self-calibration function, you can mount sensor and forget about it for the next 15 years and it will still be accurate.<\/em>\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-variaciones-de-los-sensores\">Sensor variations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both sensors are available in several versions, so it is important to know which version is most suitable at any given time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-variaciones-del-mh-z19b\">Variations of MH-Z19B<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are several different models of the MH-Z19 (at least four), discover them all in the <a href=\"https:\/\/emariete.com\/en\/sensor-co2-mh-z19b\/\">MH-Z19 bible<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are 2000, 5000 and 10000ppm versions. In general, <strong>for domestic use, the ideal is 5000 ppm.<\/strong>because it is quite easy to exceed 2000 ppm in a house.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensors are available with a black printed circuit board instead of green. <strong>These versions are false<\/strong>.
